Any Virginia-based or Virginia-affiliated startup, research team, student group, or founder developing an energy, climate, or advanced industrial technology. This includes university spinouts, pre-seed companies, and concept-stage innovators. Applicants should not have raised more than $2 million in dilutive capital, employ more than 25 people, or have been incorporated for more than 6 years.

No. Incorporation is not required to apply. However, winners must be able to receive non-dilutive award funds via W-9.

Not necessarily. Applicants may be at concept, prototype, or early commercialization stages. However, your pitch should clearly articulate the problem, technical approach, and expected impact.

SPARK VIRGINIA is broadly focused on innovations that enable a lower-carbon, more resilient energy system. This includes storage, grid technologies, industrial decarbonization, advanced materials, sensing, controls, hydrogen, alternative fuels, and other frontier solutions.

Judges typically assess:

• Problem clarity and market need
• Technical merit and feasibility
• Business model and commercialization pathway
• Scalability and market impact
• Team capability and execution potential
• Fit with Virginia’s energy and innovation ecosystem

SPARK VIRGINIA 2026 will award $10,000 total:

• $7,500 Grand Prize
• $2,500 Runner-Up Award

Awards are non-dilutive and issued via check after submission of a W-9, invoice, and brief statement of intended fund use.

Yes. While the awards are the headline, SPARK finalists also gain visibility with industry leaders, investors, utilities, and economic-development partners — often leading to pilot introductions, mentorship, and follow-on support.

Shortlisted finalists will be notified approximately 4–6 weeks before the live pitch event.

Absolutely. Past participants who did not win the grand prize are encouraged to reapply with updated progress, milestones, or new technical developments.
