Torev Motors and SCALED Technologies Win SPARK VIRGINIA Innovation Challenge at Energy Tech 2025

Richmond, VA – The SPARK VIRGINIA Innovation Challenge, held during the Energy Tech 2025 Conference, has announced its winners: Torev Motors as the Grand Prize winner ($7,500) and SCALED Technologies as the Runner-Up ($2,500). The competition, hosted at the Science Museum of Virginia, showcased eight of Virginia’s most promising energy startups, each pitching groundbreaking solutions to a panel of investors, executives, and energy leaders.

Grand Prize Winner – Torev Motors ($7,500)

Torev Motors, based in Arlington, VA, is redefining electric mobility with its rare-earth-free electric motors. Unlike conventional motors that rely on costly and geopolitically sensitive rare earth metals, TOREV’s Boost motor offers a more powerful, cost-effective, and compact alternative, reducing dependency on China’s rare earth supply chain. The company has already secured numerous Letters of Intent (LOIs) and is actively developing partnerships in the defense and mobility sectors.

Runner-Up – SCALED Technologies ($2,500)

SCALED Technologies, also headquartered in Arlington, VA, is revolutionizing power distribution with its cable-integrated medium-voltage power electronics. By embedding power conversion technology directly into power cables, SCALED eliminates the need for bulky transformers and substation infrastructure, significantly reducing deployment time and costs. Spun out from ARPA-E funding at Virginia Tech, this innovation is poised to accelerate grid expansion and support the rapid growth of data centers, electric vehicle infrastructure, and renewable energy systems.

A Catalyst for Energy Innovation in Virginia

The SPARK VIRGINIA Innovation Challenge is a platform dedicated to fostering the next generation of energy entrepreneurs, providing early-stage commercialization support, and connecting innovators with key industry stakeholders. “These startups exemplify the innovation and ingenuity that will drive Virginia’s energy future,” said Braden Croy, Program Director at the Dominion Energy Innovation Center (DEIC). “We are proud to support Torev Motors and SCALED Technologies as they work to scale their groundbreaking solutions in the Commonwealth.”
